An Entry-Level Home Theater In A Box

I’m not too much of a hardcore movie buff, but when my rickety old DVD player broke down I decided that it was time to upgrade and not replace, and started looking at modern home theater systems. Feature-wise, I wasn’t looking for anything too complex; I knew I wanted the ability to play the new Blu-ray format, backwards compatibility with my DVD collection, and a decent surround sound system. I looked at several different brands online, and settled for a Sony BDV-E580Blu-Ray Home Theater System because it had great reviews, a good price, and I’ve had positive experiences with Sony products in the past.

A Home Theater System In A Box

The Sony BDV-E580 is a home theater system in-a-box that comes with a full 5.1 surround-sound speaker system, which consists of 5 speakers and a sub-woofer, a receiver that doubles as a Blu-Ray player, as well as all the accessories you’d expect like the cables and a remote. In addition to being able to play Blu-Ray movies it comes with a plethora of additional features like an iPod dock, the capability to stream movies, videos and music from the internet, and more. You can also view pictures, movies, and play music from a USB flash drive by plugging it into the USB port on the front of the receiver. Set Up Was Easy!

I purchased my unit from Amazon and got a great deal on it. Setting it up was simple enough; just plug the TV and speakers into the receiver, hook it up to power cord, and you’re good to go. To formally test out the system, I arranged to watch a couple of different movies, chosen based on how much I liked them, but I also tried to pick movies that were different in terms of sound effects, music, and color so I could get a feel for how the system performs. I picked 3 movies, and went out of my way to secure Blu-Ray copies of each so that I could test its Blu-Ray capabilities at the same time. I picked The Matrix (not the Trilogy), The Dark Knight, and Iron Man 2. I watched each movie on a separate day, and made sure to watch the entire movie from start to finish. In addition to the movies, I also watched regular cable TV, mostly news channels and re-runs of How I Met Your Mother.

Sound And Picture Quality Are Top Notch

The sound and picture quality is top notch. The bass is nice and powerful, and the sound came through clear as crystal on all three movies, regardless of how high I turned up the volume. When viewing regular TV channels, there was a slight delay in the audio, the picture wasn’t always in sync with the sound, but I was able to correct that by adjusting the settings via the receiver interface. Speaking of the interface, it was very well designed. Visually, it resembles the PS3 menu so if you’ve got a PS3 and can navigate that without a problem, then you can navigate this one as well. I especially liked the streaming capabilities of the BDV-E580.

I’m a Netflix subscriber that previously watched all my movies on the computer; I had never watched them on an actual TV before. When I first tried out its Netflix streaming capability, I was blown away by how smooth everything was. The video quality was top-notch, and it was amazing hearing the sound played through a surround sound speaker system instead of a cheap pair of headphones. After an experience as wonderful as that, I doubt that I’ll ever go back to watching movies on the computer. I don’t really have any complaints about the system.

Really Great Value For The Money

So here is my Onkyo HT-S3400. As an avid PC gamer, I’ve invested quite a bit of time and money into my gaming rig. However, thanks to the PlayStation 3 I’ve started playing console games and enjoying the wonders of the Blu-Ray format and wanted to give my home theater system a makeover, much like I did with my gaming PC. The problem is that my console “setup” consists of nothing more than an old LCD TV and some consoles, and I’m not knowledgeable enough with home theater systems to make a good high-end system. A friend of mine recommended that I check out some entry-level Onkyo brand hardware, based on a few good experiences he had with their stuff. So, after some thorough research, I decided to purchase the Onkyo HT-S3400 5.1-Channel Home Theater System. Thanks to some clever timing, I was able to get one from a local electronics store at a discount, $350, down from the retail price of $399.

A Fully Featured Audio And Video Receiver

The Onkyo HT-S3400 is a full featured audio and video receiver that comes with a six-piece speaker set and an 8-inch passive sub-woofer. The packaging comes complete with remote control and batteries, FM Antenna, AM loop antenna and enough color coded speaker cable to wire everything up for the first time. I was impressed by how complete the package was and I appreciated all the thought that the designers put into choosing what accessories to go with the speakers. The manual spelled everything out clearly and the speaker wires and ports are all color coded so you know where everything is supposed to go. It took me around 45 minutes to get everything set up for the initial viewing.

My Test

#I decided to put my new Onkyo HT-S3400 system through its paces by playing a couple of games and movies. For these tests I chose 2 games, and 2 movies, specifically Metal Gear Solid 4 and God of War III for the PlayStation 3, and The Matrix and Iron Man. Starting with Metal Gear Solid 4, I fired up the machine and started a new game. I played right up until the fight with Laughing Octopus, to get an idea of how this new system sounds. No need to finish the game. I made sure to play through all the cut scenes and didn’t fast-forward on any of the dialog. I did a similar thing with God of War, playing until the first boss fight with Poseidon and taking note of the sound quality throughout my play session. Next were the movies. Since my PS3 also doubles as a Blu-Ray player, I borrowed a copy of The Ultimate Matrix Collection and since my PS3 also doubles as a Blu-Ray player, I used it to watch The Ultimate Matrix Collection. I played a couple of scenes from the first movie, specifically the training scene featuring Morpheus and Neo, the lobby shootout scene and the fight on the helipad. I finished off my testing phase with a complete viewing of Iron Man, simply because I liked the movie.

Crisp And Clear Sound

The Onkyo HT-S3400 sounded great. In all the tests I ran, the sound was crisp and clear, at least a thousand times better than the setup I used to have. The sub-woofer, despite being a passive sub-woofer, puts out bass that is powerful enough to make my walls shake during intense action scenes. It’s so powerful sometimes, that I end up turning it down. One thing that impressed me was the fact that I could hear the dialog in movies for once. No more turning on the English subtitles simply because the actors are being drowned out by their environment. Connectivity-wise, there are a plethora of inputs available, including a full 4 HDMI ports, compared to the 2 that are usually found on receivers at this price range. There is a plethora of options and settings available to tweak, in case the default settings don’t cut it for you, pretty much everything you could think to adjust can be adjusted. I’m pretty much amazed that there is so much value to be found in what is ultimately a $399 entry-level home-theater-in-a-box.
